Can I light a fire in a drum in a restricted fire season?
Fires in a fully enclosed drum or incinerator do not require a permit. Anyone proposing to light a fire in an open drum must register their intention to burn with the Council before they start the fire, contact Customer Services. If conditions are such that it is not advisable to light the fire the Council will advise you. The drum must have either a lid, grill or gauze on top to contain ashes. Refer to the conditions for burning in a drum or enclosed container.
Outdoor burning in residential-zoned areas or close to sensitive areas is banned all year round unless a resource consent to burn is obtained from Environment Canterbury.
If your property is located in Clean Air Zone 2 surrounding Rangiora or Kaiapoi you may not light a fire outdoors without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury between 1 May and 30 September.
