Older People Living in the Waimakariri Districtprint

The Waimakariri District has an ageing population. A number of useful resources are available to help support older people in our District, including the Waimakariri Community Directory and the Older Persons' Help Book.

The Waimakariri Community Directory

The 'Seniors and Disability Services' section in Part 1 of the Waimakariri Community Directory has information specifically relating to services and support for older people in the District.

The Older Persons' Help Book

A recent survey of the elderly community and support agencies highlighted a number of issues affecting the quality of life for older people in the Waimakariri District. These issues included the feeling of being undervalued, having financial difficulty and experiencing social and physical isolation.

As a result of the findings, the Older Persons’ Help Book was produced in large print. The Help Book provides:

  • information about services and support available in the District
  • practical advice about how older people might improve their safety and quality of life.

Copies can be accessed at Waimakariri District Council service centres and local libraries.

Over 3,000 Help Books have been distributed free of charge to a range of organisations involved in the support of elderly people in the Waimakariri District. The book has also been adopted as a resource for students by a local educational institution providing courses in eldercare.

Our partners with this project included Presbyterian Support, local GPs and all community agencies supporting or serving the elderly in the District.
