Community Safety

The Waimakariri District Council is dedicated to providing a safe and happy community. You can find information on the Council's safety initiatives geared to improving safety in public places on this page.

The Waimakariri District was accredited as an International ‘Safe Community’ by the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre on Community Safety in 1999, and reaccredited in 2006.

Using the World Health Organisation Safe Community Criteria as a foundation, the Community Team, through partnership and collaboration with the community and the Council, continue to identify needs, find solutions and deliver best practice programmes to create a 'safer, healthier, happier district'.

The Council is involved in a number of community safety initiatives, including Injury Prevention Waimakariri, Safer Community Council and Restorative Justice.
